Case study

Local authority recycling programme

Closed-loop recycling for wheelie bin materials

Stacks of blue plastic recycling containers

The challenge

A local authority introduced a new co-mingled household recycling system which required replacing existing plastic recycling baskets and boxes with new wheelie bins. This created a significant challenge: thousands of redundant containers that needed to be collected and recycled responsibly.

Our solution

Repro Plastics worked with the council to develop a practical collection and recycling programme. Over a two-week period, council recycling vehicles carried out scheduled collections across the district while dedicated collection vans followed to retrieve the emptied baskets and boxes.

The collected materials were transported for recycling, preventing local waste centres from becoming overwhelmed. Because the plastic used in the baskets matched the polymer required by the wheelie bin manufacturer, the recovered material could be processed and supplied back into wheelie bin production.

The outcome

A complete closed-loop recycling solution that prevented landfill and returned the recovered plastic directly to manufacturing.
